About
What is Mangola?
Derek and Amy Chapman first had the vision for Mangola from a dream in which artists from many nations came together under a big top--a figurative 'big' top, a creative space which literally had no ceiling.
Mangola is a collaborative creative project, bringing together artists from different nations and backgrounds to reflect on one city: Austin, Texas.
As artists who have lived in several cities both in Europe and America, we have a special place in our hearts for cities--their history, their struggles, their unique identity. Our vision is to create a multimedia creative experience through which artists reflect on a city in both its current struggles and hope for its future. And we hope through collaboration between the Mangola artists of many backgrounds, we are able to offer a dynamic interpretation.
We've chosen Austin as the first city we want to launch Mangola, because Austin is known as an "artist city" and a city which wrestles with some of the issues that concern artists. Our goal is to collaborate around three themes or topics of concern which we feel are also specific to Austin: family, beauty, authority.
We hope that by being involved in Mangola, each person not only encounters this city as a living identity, but wrestles with these same issues in their own creative process and identity.
(For more information on the themes we're working with, check out this page.)
